The machining challenge
Control heat, adhesion and swarf risk at the cut
Titanium’s low thermal conductivity keeps heat concentrated at the tool–workpiece interface rather than carrying it away with the chip. Its reactivity at elevated temperatures calls for carefully controlled cutting conditions.
01 · Adhesive wear
Limit edge build-up
Titanium can adhere to cutting edges, accelerating tool wear and affecting surface finish. Dedicated process control helps manage the tool–material interface.
02 · Work hardening
Keep the cut consistent
Incorrect feed rates can harden material during machining and damage subsequent tooling. Cutting parameters are optimised for the selected alloy.
03 · Fire hazards
Manage fine titanium swarf
Fine titanium swarf is highly flammable. High-pressure coolant systems and fire-suppression-equipped CNC centres support safe machining operations.
CNC capabilities
Machining strategies for high-strength alloys
5-axis simultaneous milling and mill-turn centres are configured for titanium alloys. Optimised process parameters support tight geometric tolerances while helping prevent micro-cracking in the heat-affected zone (HAZ).
Capability at a glance
The figures below are tolerance and surface-finish capabilities by alloy. Final requirements are confirmed against your drawings and application.
| Parameter | Grade 2 · CP Titanium | Grade 5 · Ti-6Al-4V |
|---|---|---|
| Machinability | Moderate; ductile | Difficult; high strength |
| Typical application | Heat exchangers, chemical manifolds | UAV airframes, downhole mandrels |
| Tolerance capability | ±0.005 mm | ±0.008 mm |
| Surface finish | Ra 0.4 μm | Ra 0.8 μm |
Material selection
Choose the alloy around the service conditions
Compare commercial-purity titanium with the high-strength aerospace workhorse. The right grade depends on the required balance of corrosion resistance, strength and fatigue performance.
Commercially pure titanium
Grade 2 · corrosion resistance for chloride-rich service
Grade 2 offers superior corrosion resistance in high-chloride and seawater-exposed environments. Its ductility makes it a strong choice for heat-exchanger plates, desalination piping components and fasteners exposed to persistent salt spray.
Titanium alloy
Grade 5 · strength and fatigue resistance
Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is widely used in aerospace and defence. Its higher tensile strength and fatigue resistance suit structural joints, UAV airframe bulkheads and high-pressure subsea instrumentation housings where performance and weight matter.
Designed for GCC operating conditions
Applications shaped by heat, salinity and demanding duty cycles
Extreme ambient temperatures and high-salinity seawater can accelerate galvanic corrosion and thermal fatigue. Material selection and component design should reflect the actual operating environment.
Marine & desalination
Grade 2 for chloride exposure
Components for warm, oxygenated saline water, including heat exchangers, chemical equipment, desalination piping and high-chloride service fasteners. Design focus: sound, low-porosity parts to help prevent pitting.
Defence & aerospace
Lightweight Grade 5 structures
Grade 5 joints for lightweight military UAV frame assemblies and high-vibration airframes, with strength-to-weight performance intended to exceed current aluminium alternatives.
Subsea & oil and gas
Components for harsh service
Titanium alloy fasteners and instrumentation housings for hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and high-pressure wellbore fluids, as well as specialist explosion-protected diving instruments.
